Custom and Lookalike Audiences for Dental Clinic Ads

Showing ads to everyone in your city is expensive and imprecise. Most of them don't need a dentist right now, and many will never be interested in the treatments you're promoting.

Meta's audience tools let you be smarter. You can show ads to people who already know your clinic, and you can ask Meta to find new people who resemble your best patients and inquirers. These are called custom audiences and lookalike audiences.

Used well, they make your budget go further. Used carelessly, they can create privacy problems. Here's how to use them properly.

Custom audiences: people who already know you

A custom audience is a group of people who have already interacted with your clinic in some way. Common sources:

Website visitors

Using the Meta Pixel, you can create audiences of people who visited your website, or specific pages, in a given time period.

Examples:

  • Everyone who visited in the last 30 days.
  • People who viewed your implant page but didn't submit a form.
  • People who visited the price page.

These people already showed interest. Reminding them with a relevant ad, often called retargeting, can bring them back when they're ready.

Engagement on Facebook and Instagram

People who watched your videos, interacted with your posts, messaged your page or opened a lead form.

Example: people who watched at least half of your "What happens at an implant consultation" video. They're clearly interested in the topic.

Customer lists

You can upload a list of contacts, like existing patients, which Meta matches to user accounts in a privacy-protected way.

This is where you need to be very careful. Patient data is health-related personal data. In the EU, you need a valid legal basis and proper consent to use patient contact details for advertising, and your privacy policy must explain it. Many clinics choose not to upload patient lists at all, or only use lists of people who have explicitly consented to marketing. When in doubt, get advice before uploading anything.

Lookalike audiences: new people like your best ones

A lookalike audience starts with a source audience, such as people who submitted an inquiry on your website, and asks Meta to find other people with similar characteristics and behavior.

Good sources for lookalikes:

  • People who submitted a lead form or appointment request.
  • People who completed an online booking.
  • People who engaged deeply with your content, like watching most of a video.

The better and larger your source, the better the lookalike. A source of a few hundred real inquirers is far more useful than one built from everyone who ever liked a post.

Note that Meta's automated targeting has become very capable, and in many campaigns broad targeting with strong creative and good conversion tracking performs as well as or better than lookalikes. Lookalikes are still worth testing, but they aren't a magic switch.

Smart ways to combine audiences

Retarget by interest

Show people who visited your implant page an ad about implants, such as a patient story, an FAQ video or an invitation to a consultation. Show people who visited the whitening page a whitening ad.

Exclude people who already converted

Exclude people who already submitted an inquiry or booked, so you don't pay to show them ads asking them to do what they've already done. Show them something different, or nothing.

Use time windows

Someone who visited yesterday is warmer than someone who visited three months ago. Adjust your message and frequency accordingly.

Sequence your messages

Start with educational content for a broad audience. Retarget people who engaged with a more direct invitation to book. This mirrors how patients make decisions.

Watch frequency

Retargeting audiences are often small. If you show the same ad to the same people too often, it becomes annoying and less effective. Keep an eye on frequency, the average number of times each person sees your ad, and refresh creative regularly.

Respect healthcare rules

Meta restricts targeting based on sensitive health information, and its policies don't allow ads that imply you know someone's personal health situation. An ad that says "We know you visited our implant page" or "Still missing teeth?" can feel invasive and may break the rules. Keep retargeting ads helpful and general, like "Considering implants? Here's what to expect."

Audiences need good tracking

All of this depends on a correctly installed Meta Pixel and Conversions API, with proper cookie consent. Without good tracking, audiences are small, incomplete or wrong.

How we approach it

When we run Facebook and Instagram campaigns for clinics, we test broad targeting, interest-based retargeting and lookalikes, always with privacy and Meta's health policies in mind. Then we measure what actually brings booked, attended patients. Learn more on our Facebook and Instagram ads for dentists page.
