Real Patients Beat Stock Photos: UGC Ads for Dental Clinics
Scroll through dental ads on Facebook or Instagram for a minute. You'll see the same image again and again: a perfect smile, a model who has clearly never been to that clinic, bright white background, a stock photo that's been used by a hundred other clinics.
Patients have learned to ignore these. Their brains file them under "ad" and keep scrolling.
Now picture a different ad. A real patient, filmed on a phone in the clinic, saying: "I was so nervous before my implants. Honestly, the worst part was the waiting. Dr. Petrov explained everything." Slightly imperfect lighting. Real voice. Real person.
That's user-generated style content, often called UGC. And for dental clinics, it's one of the most effective ways to build trust before a patient ever walks in.
Why real faces work
People trust people more than they trust brands. When someone is deciding whether to let a stranger work on their teeth, seeing a real person who went through the same thing reduces the fear. It answers the questions an ad can't answer convincingly by itself: Was it painful? Were they kind? Was it worth it?
This is social proof in its most direct form. Not a star rating. A human being, like them, saying it was okay.
UGC-style content also blends into social feeds. It looks like the content people already watch from friends and creators, so it gets a fair hearing instead of being skipped as "just another ad."
What counts as UGC for a clinic
- Patient testimonial videos. Short, natural, in the patient's own words. Thirty to sixty seconds is plenty.
- Treatment journey clips. A patient sharing moments from their journey, from first consultation to final result, with their permission.
- Team content. Your actual dentists and assistants explaining things on camera, filmed simply. Not a patient, but the same honest feel.
- Reaction moments. The first look in the mirror after treatment, if the patient is happy to share it.
- Written stories with a real photo. For patients who don't want to be on video.
Consent comes first
Health information is sensitive. Before you film or share anything involving a patient:
- Get clear, written consent that explains where the content will be used (website, social media, ads) and for how long.
- Let them review the final content before it goes live.
- Make it easy to withdraw consent later.
- Never pressure anyone, never pay for positive reviews, and follow your local rules for healthcare advertising.
Patients who are genuinely happy are often glad to help. Ask at the right moment, usually when they've just seen their result and are telling you how happy they are.
How to film it well enough
You don't need a film crew. You need:
- A phone with a decent camera, filmed vertically for social media.
- Natural light, ideally facing a window.
- A quiet room.
- A clip-on microphone if you can. Bad sound ruins more videos than bad lighting.
- A few prompting questions instead of a script: "What made you come in?", "What were you worried about?", "How did it go?", "What would you tell someone in your position?"
Let the patient talk. Cut the best 30–60 seconds. Add captions, because many people watch with the sound off.
Keep it honest
UGC works because it's real. The moment it feels staged, it stops working and starts doing damage. So:
- Don't script patients' words.
- Don't use actors pretending to be patients.
- Don't edit before-and-after footage to exaggerate results.
- Don't make medical promises in captions.
- Keep claims factual and let the patient's experience speak.
Turn it into ads that perform
The best-performing dental ads we see on Meta often look the least like ads. A patient story or a dentist explaining a common worry tends to hold attention better than a polished banner. Test a few UGC-style videos against your existing creative with the same budget and audience, and let the results decide.

Start with one video
You don't need a library of content to begin. One honest patient story and one short video of your dentist answering the most common question will already set you apart from most clinics in your area.
