Good vs. Bad Facebook Ads for Dentists: What's Different

On Facebook and Instagram, nobody is looking for a dentist. They're scrolling through photos from friends, news, videos and memes. Your ad has to interrupt that, in about a second, and then give people a reason to care.

That's very different from Google, where people are already searching for what you offer. And it's why so many dental ads on Meta fail: they're designed like brochures, not like content people actually stop for.

Let's look at what usually separates a bad Meta ad from a good one.

What a typical bad dental ad looks like

You've seen it:

  • A stock photo of a model with perfect teeth.
  • The clinic logo, big, in the corner.
  • Text like "Your smile is our priority! Modern equipment. Experienced team. Book now!"
  • A long caption listing every service the clinic offers.
  • A generic "Learn more" button that leads to the homepage.

There's nothing wrong with any of it, exactly. It's just invisible. It looks like an ad, so people scroll past. It says what every other clinic says. It doesn't speak to anyone in particular.

What good dental ads usually have in common

1. They stop the scroll

The first second matters most. Good ads open with something that catches attention naturally:

  • A real person talking to the camera.
  • A relatable question: "Hiding your smile in photos?"
  • Movement, a face or something unexpected.
  • Captions that make sense with the sound off, since many people watch without sound.

2. They look native

The best-performing ads often don't look like ads. They look like posts: phone-filmed video, natural light, real people, casual tone. This is why UGC-style content, meaning user-generated or creator-style video, often outperforms polished studio ads.

3. They speak to one person and one problem

Instead of listing everything, a good ad focuses on one treatment and one type of patient. "If you've been putting off implants because you're scared it'll hurt, here's what it's actually like." The right people feel seen; everyone else scrolls past, which is fine.

4. They're specific

Specific beats general every time. Not "modern dentistry," but "3D scan and written treatment plan at your first visit." Not "affordable," but "pay in monthly installments."

5. They show real people

Your dentist explaining a treatment. Your team. Your actual clinic. With consent, real patients talking about their experience. Real faces build trust in a way stock photos never will.

6. They have one clear next step

A good ad asks for one thing: book a consultation, send a message, get the price list. It leads to a page or form built for that one action, not to the homepage.

7. They follow the rules

Healthcare ads on Meta have restrictions. Avoid implying you know personal characteristics of the viewer ("Are you missing teeth?" can be risky in some forms), avoid exaggerated before-and-after claims, and don't promise specific results. When in doubt, check Meta's advertising policies.

Ad formats that tend to work for clinics

  • Short talking-head videos of the dentist answering a common question.
  • UGC-style testimonials from real patients, with consent.
  • Behind-the-scenes clips showing the clinic and what a visit looks like.
  • Myth vs. fact videos or carousels.
  • Step-by-step carousels showing a treatment journey.
  • Simple offer ads with a clear, honest offer and a real photo.

Test, don't guess

Even experienced marketers can't reliably predict which ad will win. The answer is testing:

  • Run several different creatives at the same time, with different hooks, formats and messages.
  • Give them enough time and budget to produce meaningful results.
  • Judge by inquiries and booked appointments, not likes and comments.
  • Keep the winners, cut the losers and create new variations of what works.

Ads also wear out. When the same people see the same ad repeatedly, results usually decline. Plan to refresh creative regularly.

The ad is only the beginning

A great ad that leads to a slow, confusing page or an inquiry nobody answers for two days still fails. Make sure the landing page matches the ad's promise, and that every inquiry gets a fast, personal response.
