Understanding Which Dental Ads Are Effective: A Practical Guide to Testing and Tracking Results
How to Know Which Dental Ads Are Really Working: Our Honest Approach to Testing and Tracking
Running ads for dental clinics can be a bit of a puzzle. Every clinic wants more new patients, but with so many options - Google Ads, Facebook Ads, different headlines, images, and offers - how do you actually know which ads are bringing in results and which ones are just draining your budget? At G-Media, we’ve spent a lot of time wrestling with these questions, and we want to share what we’ve learned along the way.
The Big Question: Google Ads or Facebook Ads First?
One of the first things we ask ourselves (and our clients) is: where do you want to start - Google Ads or Facebook Ads? Both platforms can work for dental practices, but they do different things. Google Ads are great for people who are actively searching for a dentist near them. These are folks who already know they need a dental appointment, so they’re more likely to book. Facebook Ads, on the other hand, are better for reaching people who might not be actively looking, but could be convinced by a good offer or a friendly introduction to your clinic.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. Sometimes we start with Google Ads if the clinic wants to capture those high-intent searchers. Other times, if the clinic is looking to build more awareness in their community, we’ll test Facebook Ads first. The key is not to rely on guesses or gut feelings, but to test and see what actually works for your specific clinic and market.
What Should You Test First: Headlines, Images, or Offers?
Once we’ve picked a platform, the next step is figuring out what part of the ad to test. It can be tempting to change everything at once, but that just leads to confusion - you won’t know what actually made the difference. That’s where split testing (or A/B testing) comes in.
We usually recommend starting with just one variable. For example, try two different headlines with the same image and offer. See which one gets more clicks or calls. Once you have a winner, move on to testing the image, and then the offer. Sometimes the smallest change - like tweaking a headline from “Gentle Dental Care” to “Same-Day Emergency Appointments” - can make a big difference in response.
Tracking What Matters: Clicks vs. Actual Appointments
Clicks are nice, but they don’t pay the bills. The real goal is to get more patients booking appointments. One mistake we see a lot is clinics getting excited about high click rates, but not actually tracking if those clicks turn into phone calls or online bookings.
To get a clear picture, we always set up proper tracking. That means using call tracking numbers, tracking forms, and making sure we can see which ad (and even which version of an ad) led to a real appointment. It’s a bit more work, but it’s the only way to know what’s really working. Sometimes an ad with fewer clicks actually brings in more patients, because it’s attracting the right people.
Learning as We Go
We don’t have all the answers, and honestly, nobody does. That’s why we’re always testing, tweaking, and learning. Sometimes we’re surprised by what works - like a simple photo of the dentist and team outperforms a fancy graphic, or a straightforward “free consultation” offer beats a more complicated promotion. The important thing is to keep an open mind and not get too attached to any one idea.
