Discovering What Dental Ads Really Work: Insights from the Digital Marketing Trenches

How to Truly Know Which Dental Ads Are Working: Lessons from the Trenches

When we first started running digital marketing campaigns for dental clinics, we thought the hardest part would be coming up with creative ad ideas or finding the right audience. But as we’ve worked with more practices, we’ve realized that the real challenge isn’t just launching ads - it’s figuring out which ones are actually making a difference for our clients.

It’s a problem we see all the time: clinics invest in Google and Facebook ads, but after a few weeks, it’s hard to say with confidence which ads are driving new appointments and which ones are just burning through the budget. Over the years, we’ve learned a few things about how to get real answers from our ad campaigns, and we wanted to share some of those lessons here.

Split Testing: Less Is More

One of the first mistakes we made (and we still see a lot of clinics make) is changing too many things at once when testing ads. Maybe you switch up the headline, the image, the call-to-action, and the audience - all in one go. The problem is, when you get different results, you don’t know what actually caused the change.

We’ve found it’s better to test one element at a time. For example, if you want to know if a different image will attract more clicks, keep everything else the same and just swap out the image. It sounds slow, but it’s the only way to get clear, actionable data. If you try to do too much at once, the results get muddy and it’s almost impossible to learn anything useful.

Choosing the Right Platforms (and Understanding How Patients Behave)

Another thing we’ve learned is that not all platforms are created equal, especially in dental marketing. Patients don’t behave the same way on Google as they do on Facebook. On Google, people are often searching because they need a dentist right now - they’re motivated and looking for answers. On Facebook, they might just be scrolling and see an ad for teeth whitening or a new patient special.

We try to keep this in mind when planning campaigns. For urgent services or people actively searching, we lean into Google Ads. For building awareness or promoting special offers, Facebook and Instagram can be more effective. But it’s not just about picking one platform and forgetting the others. We usually run tests on both and compare the results, looking at real outcomes like booked appointments, not just clicks.

Focusing on the Metrics That Matter

This might sound obvious, but it’s amazing how easy it is to get distracted by vanity metrics like clicks, impressions, or even likes. At the end of the day, what really matters is whether people are booking appointments. We’ve worked with clinics who were thrilled to see their ad got thousands of impressions, but when we dug into the numbers, it hadn’t led to a single new patient.

To avoid this, we always try to track the full patient journey - from the moment someone clicks an ad, to when they fill out a form, to when they actually show up for their appointment. It’s not always easy (especially if the clinic’s systems aren’t set up for tracking), but it’s worth the effort. When you know which ads are bringing in real patients, you can invest more confidently and stop wasting money on what isn’t working.

Learning Together

We don’t have all the answers, and we’re always learning. Every clinic is different, and what works in one market might not work in another. But by testing carefully, choosing platforms thoughtfully, and focusing on the outcomes that matter, we’ve been able to help our clients grow in a way that feels sustainable - not just chasing the latest marketing fad.

If you’re a dental practice owner or manager and you’re wrestling with some of these same questions, we’d love to connect and swap ideas. Sometimes the best solutions come from just talking things through with someone who’s been in the trenches too.
