Discovering the Real Impact of Dental Ads: How to Identify What's Working and What's Not

How We Actually Figure Out Which Dental Ads Are Working (And Which Ones Are Quietly Wasting Money)

When we first started running ads for dental clinics, we thought the hard part would be “creating good ads.”

Turns out, that’s only half the battle.

The real challenge is knowing, with confidence, which ad is truly working best - and which one is just burning through your budget while looking good in the dashboard.

That’s where split testing (or A/B testing) comes in. But in practice, it’s not as simple as “run two ads and pick the winner.” Especially for dentists, where booked appointments and patient quality matter more than clicks.

In this post, we want to walk you through how we think about testing dental ads in a practical, down-to-earth way - the same way we do it for our own clients.

Why “testing everything at once” doesn’t actually help

A common situation we see:

A clinic wants better results, so they change everything at the same time:

  • New headline
  • New image or video
  • New offer
  • New audience

The numbers might improve… or they might not. But even if they do, nobody knows why.

Was it the new offer?

The new image?

The different audience?

When everything changes at once, you can’t learn anything useful. You just end up guessing.

So we try to keep our tests simple and focused. Most of the time, we’ll pick one main thing to test at a time:

  • First: the offer (for example, “$99 new patient exam and cleaning” vs “Free whitening consult with exam”)
  • Then: the headline or main message
  • Then: the creative (image vs video, or different styles of visuals)

By isolating one variable, we can actually say, “This offer clearly outperformed that one,” instead of “Something in this mix worked better, but we’re not sure what.”

How we think about Google vs Facebook for dentists

Another big question we run into a lot: how do you compare Google Ads and Facebook Ads fairly for a dental clinic?

They behave very differently.

On Google, people are actively searching:

  • “emergency dentist near me”
  • “invisalign dentist [city]”
  • “kids dentist open saturday”

These are high-intent patients. They already know they need a dentist.

On Facebook (and Instagram), most people aren’t searching for a dentist at all. They’re scrolling, and your ad interrupts them. You’re relying on:

  • A compelling offer
  • A strong brand story
  • The right timing in their life (new to the area, unhappy with current dentist, etc.)

Because of that, we don’t judge both platforms by exactly the same rules.

For Google, we’re usually stricter and faster with decisions:

  • Is it bringing in booked appointments at a reasonable cost?
  • Are those patients actually showing up and accepting treatment?

For Facebook, we give a bit more room:

  • Is it generating leads at a decent cost?
  • Are people engaging with the brand (saving posts, clicking through, watching videos)?
  • Are we seeing a lift in branded searches over time (more people searching the clinic’s name on Google)?

We still care about cost per appointment on both platforms, but we also accept that Facebook often plays more of a “assist” role in the patient journey.

Which metrics actually matter for dental campaigns

It’s easy to get lost in vanity metrics:

  • Click-through rate (CTR)
  • Impressions
  • Likes and comments

These can be useful signals, but they don’t pay the bills.

For dental clinics, we tend to focus on:

  • Cost per lead (form fill, call, message)
  • Cost per booked appointment
  • Show-up rate (how many actually come in)
  • Treatment acceptance and revenue per patient over time

Sometimes this leads to counterintuitive decisions:

  • An ad with a high CTR but low conversion rate might look “good” on the surface, but it’s not actually bringing in patients.
  • Another ad might have a lower CTR, but the people who do click are serious and book at a much higher rate. That’s usually the one we keep.

We also pay attention to lead quality:

  • Are they no-shows?
  • Are they only interested in the cheapest option?
  • Are they likely to come back for hygiene and future treatment?

An ad that brings in a lot of low-quality leads can look great in the ad account, but cause chaos for the front desk and hurt the clinic’s trust in marketing overall.

How long we let a test run

One of the hardest parts of testing is knowing when to call a winner.

If you decide too early, you might kill a good ad before it has enough data.

If you wait too long, you waste budget on a poor performer.

In most dental campaigns, we look at:

  • A minimum time window (often 7-14 days, depending on budget and traffic)
  • A minimum amount of spend per variation (so we’re not judging based on 3 clicks and 1 lead)

We’d rather be slightly patient and make a solid decision than jump around every 48 hours and never really learn anything.

Keeping testing simple and useful

In practice, the tests that work best for dental clinics tend to be:

  • One clear variable at a time (offer, headline, or creative)
  • Same audience, same budget, same timeframe
  • Judged mainly by cost per appointment and overall return, not just clicks or likes

We’re still refining our own internal rules all the time, but this simple structure has helped us cut a lot of wasted spend and focus on what actually moves the needle for clinics.

If you’re running ads for a dental clinic and you’re not sure what’s truly working vs what just looks good in the dashboard, you can reach out to us and we can walk through your current setup together. Sometimes a straightforward conversation and a few focused tests are all it takes to turn a “meh” campaign into something reliably profitable.
